5 Star Quick Reviews

Since I haven’t posted reviews in a long time I decided to share several recent 5 star books!

⭐️ Punching the Air by @ibizoboi and @dr.yusefsalaam is about a teenager who was imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit. It’s heartbreaking, rage-inducing, thought provoking, and beautifully written. It’s also a novel written in verse, which I’m all about right now 🙌🏻
SUMMARY: One fateful night, an altercation in a gentrifying neighborhood escalates into tragedy. ‘Boys just being boys’ turns out to be true only when those boys are white. Suddenly, at just sixteen years old, Amal Shahid’s bright future is upended: he is convicted of a crime he didn’t commit and sent to prison. Despair and rage almost sink him until he turns to the refuge of his words, his art. This never should have been his story. But can he change it? With spellbinding lyricism, award-winning author Ibi Zoboi and prison reform activist Yusef Salaam tell a moving and deeply profound story about how one boy is able to maintain his humanity and fight for the truth, in a system designed to strip him of both.
Punching the Air is available now from HarperCollins.

⭐️ Night Terrors by @jzfosterauthor and @justinmwoodward is the fourth book in their fantastic Reality Bleed sci-fi horror series. If you’ve seen me talk about any of the earlier books you know I’m OBSESSED with this series about alternate dimension aliens invading Mars and the soldiers trying to stop them. Book 4 continues the trend of nonstop action/violence, horrifying creatures, and excellent character development. I can’t wait to read book 5!
SUMMARY: Ammunition is running low, and even now on the surface of Mars, the war continues. The Harbinger, herald of The Mother, has come with a dark purpose. Bloodied, and on the run, few members of the Perihelion remain. What will the survivors do to complete their mission and escape Mars? Dark truths and secrets are revealed in the conclusion to the events of the Mars Felicity Station.
Night Terrors is available now.

⭐️ ETHER, VOL 1 is a graphic novel from @darkhorsecomics written by @matt.kindt.for.real and illustrated by @davidrubinm. It’s about a scientist/adventurer getting wrapped up in the mysteries of a magical fantasy world. This is exactly what I want in a FUN comic. Surprises and excitement on every page, dazzling artwork, engaging story, interesting characters, etc. I had a blast reading this first volume, and was especially eating up all the strange creatures and interesting world building! Swipe to the end to see the screaming bullet 😂
SUMMARY: A science-minded adventurer gets mixed up in the mysteries of a fantasy world in this charming new adventure from an award-winning creative team. Boone Dias is an interdimensional explorer, a scientist from Earth who has stumbled into great responsibility. He’s got an explanation for everything, so of course the Ether’s magical residents turn to him to solve their toughest crimes. But maybe keeping the Real and the Abstract separate is too big a job for just one man.

Ether, Vol 1 is out now from Dark Horse Comics.
